Gremmeniella canker, also known as Scleroderris canker, is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Gremmeniella abietina (formerly Gremmenia infestans). It affects various species of conifers worldwide, acting as a major threat to both nursery-grown saplings and mature forest stands.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are pine species, particularly the Scots pine. However, other conifers such as spruces, firs, and larches can also be susceptible. The fungus typically invades the shoots and branches, effectively disrupting the tree's vascular system and stopping the flow of nutrients.

Symptoms of the infection include chlorosis of the needles, which eventually turn reddish-brown and shed prematurely. Small, sunken cankers develop on the branches, often accompanied by resin flow. If the infection reaches the stem, it causes necrosis of the bark, which can eventually girdle the tree and lead to top dieback and overall plant mortality.

The development of the disease is heavily favored by cool, wet weather conditions. Spores are disseminated by rain splash and wind, typically infecting trees during cool spring or autumn months. Dense plantings and sites with poor air circulation are particularly prone to rapid disease spread, as these environments maintain the moisture levels required for fungal proliferation.

Management strategies focus on silvicultural practices rather than chemical control, which is often difficult in forest settings. Key steps include the removal and destruction of infected material, thinning stands to improve airflow, and selecting resistant tree varieties. Proper site selection and avoiding over-dense planting in high-risk areas are crucial for preventing major outbreaks.
