Gremmeniella canker, frequently referred to as Scleroderris canker, is a destructive fungal disease affecting conifer trees worldwide. The causal agent is the ascomycete fungus Gremmeniella abietina, which targets the needles, branches, and stems. This disease is particularly notorious for causing severe shoot blight and mortality in forest plantations.

Primary hosts for this pathogen include various pine species, especially the Scots pine. While pines are the most frequently damaged, the fungus can also infect species of spruce, fir, and larch. Young plantations and nurseries are at the highest risk, as the fungus thrives in microclimates found within dense tree stands.

The first symptoms typically appear in early spring, manifesting as yellowing and browning of the needles on terminal shoots. As the infection progresses, cankers form on the bark, leading to resin flow and eventual girdling of the branch or stem. The presence of tiny black fruiting bodies on the dead bark confirms the presence of the fungal pathogen.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease dissemination. High humidity, cool temperatures, and frequent rainfall facilitate the spread of fungal spores.
