Description

Scleroderris canker, caused by the fungal pathogen Gremmeniella abietina (also known as Brunchorstia pinea), is a devastating disease affecting conifers globally. It primarily targets branches and stems, leading to severe canopy dieback and, in many instances, the death of the host tree, particularly among young forest plantations and nursery stock.

The disease is most commonly found on various species of pine, including Scots pine, red pine, and lodgepole pine. While pines are the primary hosts, the fungus can also impact other conifers such as spruce and fir. The severity of the infection depends on the specific race of the fungus, with some strains showing high virulence towards native tree populations.

Symptoms typically become visible in early spring, starting with the discoloration of needles at the base of current-year shoots, which turn orange-brown. As the infection progresses, the disease moves into the branch wood, causing resin exudation, bark necrosis, and the formation of cankers. In advanced stages, the entire shoot dies, leading to a stunted and malformed appearance.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Gremmeniella abietina. High humidity, cool temperatures, and frequent rainfall create the ideal environment for the production and dispersal of fungal spores. The spores are typically spread by splashing rain or wind, penetrating the tree through succulent tissues or directly through the needles and buds.

Management of Scleroderris canker focuses on sanitation and preventive silvicultural practices. This includes the removal and destruction of infected material, selecting resistant species for planting, and ensuring proper spacing to improve air circulation. Fungicide applications may be effective in nurseries to protect seedlings, but management in natural stands relies heavily on long-term forest health monitoring.
