The fungus Gremmeniella laricina is the primary pathogen responsible for this shoot blight disease, which inflicts significant necrotic damage on the branches and main stems of coniferous trees. Larch species are the most frequent hosts, although other conifers can also be affected depending on environmental stress levels. The disease is known for its persistent and debilitating impact on tree vitality.

The visual symptoms typically include chlorosis (yellowing) of the needles, which progresses from the top of the shoot downward, followed by premature needle cast. The bark in infected areas shows necrotic lesions, often accompanied by resin exudation. As the infection progresses, the bark cracks and creates deep cankers, which severely disrupt the tree's vascular system and nutrient transport.

The development and spread of Gremmeniella laricina are heavily dependent on climatic conditions, with high humidity and cool, wet weather being the primary drivers. Spores are easily disseminated via wind and splashing rain, especially during the spring and autumn months. Trees under physiological stress or those growing in overcrowded, poorly ventilated stands are significantly more susceptible to infection.
