This pathogen maintains a strong symbiotic relationship with bark beetles, which act as vectors, transporting the fungal spores directly into the tree's vascular system.
The primary hosts for this fungus are coniferous trees, specifically species within the Pinus genus. It is predominantly distributed across East Asian forest ecosystems, where it colonizes weakened or insect-attacked trees, invading the xylem through galleries created by boring insects.
The hallmark symptoms of infection include a characteristic gray-blue to dark-brown discoloration of the sapwood. Unlike wood-decaying fungi that compromise structural integrity, Grosmannia aoshimae focuses on the colonization of parenchymal cells, significantly reducing the commercial value of the timber by staining it, despite the lack of initial mechanical damage.
