Grovesiella canker (Grovesiella abieticola) is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, responsible for causing necrotic cankers on the stems and branches of various coniferous trees. This disease represents a significant threat to forest nurseries and young plantations, where rapid infection can lead to extensive tree mortality if not managed correctly.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are species within the Abies genus, particularly the silver fir. While it specifically targets these coniferous species, the fungus is capable of surviving and spreading under diverse forest conditions. By invading the bark and cambium layers, the fungus disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, progressively weakening the host plant from within.

The infection is characterized by distinct localized necrosis of the bark. As the disease advances, the infected area often becomes sunken, and the tree may exhibit excessive resin flow near the site of the canker. During the sporulation phase, small, disc-like fruiting bodies (apothecia) appear on the surface of the bark, serving as the primary source of inoculum for further spread of the disease.

Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing rain, gaining entry into the tree through various openings such as frost cracks, insect galleries, or minor mechanical wounds in the bark.

The impact of this disease on forest health is severe. When the canker develops around the circumference of the stem, it effectively girdles the tree, cutting off nutrient flow to the canopy. This leads to flagging, crown dieback, and eventually the death of the entire tree.
