While many species are known as saprotrophs that decompose dead organic matter, some may act as opportunistic pathogens on weakened or stressed trees. The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Guepinia. These basidiomycetes propagate via spores that germinate upon landing on injured or dying woody tissues. The fungus colonizes the bark and cambium layers, slowly interfering with the plant's vascular transportation systems and overall nutrient distribution.

Host plants typically include a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. These fungi favor environments where plants are already under stress from drought, mechanical damage, severe winters, or poor soil conditions. Healthy, vigorously growing trees are generally more resistant, while wounded specimens serve as entry points for the infection.

Clinical signs include the development of characteristic gelatinous fruiting bodies on the tree surface. Affected bark may darken, crack, or peel off, revealing fungal mycelium beneath. Over time, the internal wood structure undergoes decay, which manifests as wilting leaves, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the gradual death of the entire tree.

Prevention and management strategies focus on maintaining tree vigor and minimizing potential entry sites for the fungus. Regular monitoring is essential to detect early stages of infection. Proper pruning techniques, immediate sealing of open wounds with protective sealants, and the removal and destruction of infected wood material are effective ways to mitigate the spread of the pathogen.
