Guepiniopsis is a genus of fungi belonging to the Dacrymycetales order, commonly known for their gelatinous, often bright yellow or orange fruiting bodies. While primarily saprotrophic, they act as opportunistic pathogens that target damaged or stressed woody tissues in trees and shrubs, contributing to wood decay.

The causal agents are fungi that thrive by breaking down cellulose and lignin in compromised bark. They are particularly prevalent on fruit trees and ornamental woody plants that have suffered from frost cracks, sunscald, or improper pruning practices, which provide an entry point for fungal spores.

Symptoms of an infection include the presence of small, cup-shaped or horn-shaped yellow growths on the surface of the bark. These are the reproductive structures of the fungus. Affected areas often show signs of necrosis, discoloration of the bark, and can eventually lead to branch dieback if the colonization reaches the cambium layer.

The development of Guepiniopsis is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high moisture and moderate temperatures. The fungus spreads via wind-dispersed spores that germinate on wet surfaces. Poor orchard hygiene, such as leaving pruning debris or diseased wood on the ground, significantly increases the pressure of the pathogen in the area.

Management strategies focus on preventive measures. Pruning should be performed only in dry weather to minimize infection risks. All large cuts must be treated with appropriate sealants. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and watering is critical, as healthy trees can effectively compartmentalize and isolate potential infection sites.

If the infection is already established, it is necessary to excise the infected tissue until healthy, clean wood is reached, followed by the application of copper-based fungicides. Monitoring the orchard regularly for these tell-tale bright colored growths is essential for timely intervention and preventing structural damage to the trees.
