The disease is caused by the fungus Guignardia manihotis, a specialized pathogen that affects foliage. It belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is responsible for significant leaf blight symptoms in susceptible plant hosts. The fungus survives in infected leaf tissue, utilizing its asexual and sexual spore stages to perpetuate its life cycle across seasons.
The primary host for this pathogen is cassava (Manihot esculenta), a vital staple crop worldwide. While the disease primarily impacts the leaves, its effect on plant physiology is severe. By compromising the foliage, the pathogen reduces the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, which is essential for the starch accumulation process in the tuberous roots.
Symptoms typically appear as small, irregular to circular brown spots on the leaf surface, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. When severe, the loss of foliage leads to a significant decrease in root yields, often resulting in smaller and fewer tubers.
