Description

The family Gyalectaceae belongs to the order Ostropales and comprises a diverse group of lichens. In the field of plant pathology, it is essential to clarify that Gyalectaceae are not plant diseases. They are complex symbiotic organisms consisting of a fungal partner and a photobiont (algae or cyanobacteria), living as epiphytes on trees, rocks, or soil.

Unlike parasitic fungi that cause plant diseases, Gyalectaceae do not attack living tissues or extract nutrients from the host plant's vascular system. Therefore, there is no pathogen type or specific plant disease associated with this group. Their presence on the bark of plants is purely superficial and ecological in nature.

These lichens typically inhabit orchard trees or forest vegetation where humidity levels are consistently high and air pollution is minimal. Because they are highly sensitive to air quality, their presence often serves as a natural indicator of environmental health and stable atmospheric conditions in the region.

Regarding their impact on agriculture, these lichens do not cause crop damage, necrosis, or systemic plant decline. However, in dense or neglected plantations, heavy lichen coverage may create a micro-environment that holds moisture on the bark for extended periods, which some horticulturists consider a minor risk for subsequent colonisation by harmful insects.

Management and prevention measures are not focused on elimination but on maintenance. Horticultural best practices, such as proper tree pruning to ensure adequate sunlight and air movement, are usually sufficient to prevent excessive lichen growth. No fungicidal treatment is required, as the Gyalectaceae are not pathogenic to crops.
