Gymnoascus is a genus of ascomycete fungi that are primarily known as saprotrophs but can exhibit pathogenic behavior under favorable environmental conditions. Belonging to the class Eurotiomycetes, these fungi are commonly found in soil, organic debris, and stored agricultural commodities, where they can transition from decomposing matter to infecting living plant tissues.

The pathogen affects a variety of agricultural crops, including cereals, vegetables, and technical plants. It is particularly hazardous to stored seeds and young seedlings grown under high-humidity conditions. The fungus penetrates plant tissues through minor abrasions or weakened areas of the seed coat or epidermis, initiating decay and metabolic disruption.
