Gymnopus erythropus is a basidiomycete fungus belonging to the Marasmiaceae family. In agronomy and silviculture, this fungus is primarily known as a saprotroph that facilitates the decomposition of dead organic matter. While typically harmless, it can become an opportunistic pathogen in weakened trees, accelerating decay and wood degradation.
The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium colonizing woody tissues. The fungus produces specialized enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, which are essential components of the tree's structural integrity. When a tree is already stressed by drought, pests, or physical injury, the fungus utilizes these openings to penetrate deep into the woody heartwood.
Host plants commonly affected by this fungus include various deciduous hardwood species and neglected orchard trees. The infection often starts near the root collar or where bark damage has occurred, allowing the spores to settle and germinate in moisture-rich environments. Dense, poorly ventilated stands are particularly susceptible to colonization.
Symptoms of infestation include the emergence of small, reddish-brown fruiting bodies directly on the bark or at the base of the tree. The internal wood tissue loses its hardness, turning into a soft, spongy, or decayed mass. Over time, the affected wood loses its load-bearing capacity, which often leads to structural failure and the tree becoming prone to wind-throw.
