Gymnopus montagnei is a fungal species primarily known as a saprotroph, though it can act as an opportunistic pathogen in agricultural settings. It predominantly targets the root systems of various plants, especially those already under physiological stress. As an agent of root decay, it thrives in environments rich in organic matter, where it can transition from decaying dead plant material to invading weakened living tissues.

The causative agent, the mycelium of Gymnopus montagnei, spreads through the soil profile. The resulting disease belongs to the category of root rots. Once the infection is established, it disrupts the xylem vessels and root cortex, which prevents the effective uptake of water and vital nutrients. This leads to the systemic weakening of the plant and may eventually cause total wilting and plant death.

Clinical signs of the infection include chlorosis (yellowing) of the foliage, stunted growth, and a gradual wilting that does not respond to irrigation. Upon examination of the root system, one may observe blackened or decayed areas where the root bark has disintegrated. In high-humidity conditions, a fine, whitish mycelial mat may be visible on the surface of the affected root crowns.

The development and spread of this fungus are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high moisture levels and poor soil drainage. Temperatures between 15°C and 22°C are optimal for its proliferation. Compacted, heavy soils that lack proper aeration are particularly susceptible to colonization by this pathogen, especially when excessive organic mulch is present at the base of the crops.

Protection and prevention strategies should focus on soil health and environment management. Key methods include:

  • Improving soil drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
  • Implementing proper crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Ensuring adequate aeration through regular mechanical cultivation.
  • Applying targeted fungicides to the soil if localized outbreaks are identified.
  • Avoiding excessive use of non-composted manure in proximity to sensitive root zones.
