Gymnosporangium is a genus of rust fungi that cause a significant disease known as cedar-apple or pear rust. The most common species, Gymnosporangium sabinae, is heteroecious, meaning it requires two different host plants to complete its complex life cycle: a primary host from the genus Juniperus (junipers) and a secondary host from the family Rosaceae, primarily pear trees.

This pathogen mainly affects pear trees, quince, and various species of ornamental junipers. The disease is particularly problematic in orchards or gardens where susceptible pear varieties are planted in close proximity to host junipers, as the fungus relies on wind-borne spores to travel between these different hosts.

Symptoms on pear trees are visible in the spring as bright orange or reddish-yellow spots on the upper leaf surface. By mid-summer, small, cone-shaped structures (aecia) appear on the undersides of the leaves. On juniper trees, the infection is characterized by galls or swollen, distorted branches that exude jelly-like, orange-brown spore masses during damp spring weather.

The development and spread of the fungus are favored by moist, mild weather conditions, especially during the flowering period of fruit trees. Spores can be transported by wind for several kilometers, making infection possible even in orchards located far from infected junipers. The availability of wet surfaces on leaves is crucial for the germination of the spores.

The economic impact of the disease is significant due to premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree and negatively affects photosynthesis. This leads to reduced fruit quality, stunted growth, and decreased winter hardiness. Severe, chronic infections can ultimately lead to the decline of the entire tree if left untreated.

Effective control requires a combination of cultural and chemical methods. It is essential to prune and destroy galls on infected junipers. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate fungicides during the early spring, specifically targeting the period before and after bloom to prevent spore germination. Choosing resistant pear cultivars is a recommended long-term strategy for high-risk areas.
