Description

The disease is caused by the heteroecious basidiomycete fungus Gymnosporangium gracile. This pathogen requires two distinct hosts to complete its life cycle: plants of the genus Juniperus (juniper) and species within the Rosaceae family (such as hawthorn, apple, serviceberry, and rose).

Susceptible hosts include various juniper species, which act as the primary overwintering sites, and several ornamental or fruit-bearing shrubs. During the spring, spores are wind-dispersed from the conifers to the deciduous hosts, facilitating the spread of the infection throughout gardens and landscapes.

Symptoms on juniper typically appear as swollen galls or distortions on branches, which produce gelatinous, orange-to-brown telial horns during wet weather. On the leaves and fruits of rosaceous plants, the infection manifests as bright, discolored spots, eventually forming small, cone-shaped aecia on the underside of the foliage.

Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures during the spring, significantly promote the development and dissemination of the pathogen. Under favorable conditions, the fungus can cause significant defoliation and reduction in the vitality of affected woody plants.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this rust. This includes maintaining physical distance between juniper species and susceptible fruit trees or shrubs, pruning out infected woody tissues on juniper hosts, and implementing a schedule of preventive fungicide applications during the early stages of plant growth.
