Description

The causal agent of this disease is the rust fungus Gymnosporangium japonicum. As an obligate parasite, it requires two distinct host plant species to complete its complex lifecycle: conifers of the genus Juniperus and various plants within the Rosaceae family, such as flowering quince and pears.

The primary hosts affected by this pathogen include various juniper species and decorative shrubs. The fungus establishes itself within the host tissues, causing chronic infection that can persist for many years. It interferes with the plant's nutrient transport system and overall vitality, leading to localized swelling and structural damage.

Symptoms are most visible as orange, gelatinous telial horns emerging from galls on juniper branches during moist spring weather. On Rosaceae hosts, the disease presents as prominent, bright orange-red lesions on leaves and fruit, often accompanied by the development of aecia that release spores to infect juniper trees.

The development and spread of the fungus are strictly regulated by environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Spores require moisture to germinate and wind for dispersal. Consequently, wet spring seasons often correlate with higher infection rates and the rapid spread of the disease between adjacent host plants.

The economic and aesthetic impact is significant, as the infection leads to dieback, stunted growth, and potential death of the host plant. Preventive measures are crucial and include regular pruning of infected branches, maintaining spatial distance between juniper and susceptible fruit trees, and the application of appropriate systemic or contact fungicides during the critical periods of spore production.
