Description

Pathogen and disease type. The disease is caused by the rust fungus Gymnosporangium orientale. It is a heteroecious fungus, meaning it requires two different hosts to complete its life cycle: juniper species (genus Juniperus) serve as the primary host for overwintering, while pear trees (genus Pyrus) act as the host for seasonal vegetative growth.

Host plants. The fungus primarily infects various species of pear, including common pears and ornamental pear varieties. On the other side, juniper species, particularly Chinese juniper, serve as the essential alternate host where the pathogen survives the winter and produces spores that infect nearby orchards.

Symptoms and signs. On pear leaves, infection is identified by bright orange spots on the upper leaf surface, with cone-like aecia forming on the underside. On juniper trees, the infection causes the development of galls and swellings. During wet spring weather, these galls sprout orange-brown, gelatinous spore-producing structures.

Development and impact. The pathogen thrives in cool, wet spring weather conditions, which facilitate the release and transport of spores. The economic impact includes severe leaf drop, reduced fruit yield, and overall weakening of the trees, making them susceptible to other stressors. Chronic infections can significantly damage the structural integrity of juniper branches.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Spatial separation: Keep pear orchards and ornamental juniper plantings at least 500 meters apart.
  • Sanitation: Regularly inspect and prune out any galls or infected branches on juniper plants.
  • Chemical control: Apply fungicides, such as copper-based products or triazoles, during the crucial spring periods of bud break and flowering.
  • Plant health: Maintain optimal soil fertility and watering practices to boost the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
