Description
The disease is caused by the rust fungus Gymnosporangium torminali-juniperini, which is a heteroecious pathogen. This means it requires two unrelated plant hosts to complete its complex biological life cycle, making it a persistent threat in diverse garden landscapes.
Primary hosts include various species of Juniper, while the alternate hosts are mainly members of the Rosaceae family, most notably the Rowan (mountain ash), as well as hawthorn. The proximity of these host plants is the main trigger for the disease establishment.
Symptoms on juniper appear as swollen galls or woody deformations on branches, which produce gelatinous orange spore masses during damp spring weather. On rowan, the disease manifests as bright yellow-orange spots on the upper leaf surface, later developing fungal structures on the underside.
Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and cool, wet spring temperatures, are ideal for the development and dissemination of spores. Spores are wind-borne and can travel hundreds of meters, quickly infecting healthy vegetation in the surrounding area.
The harmful impact of this rust includes significant physiological stress to the host plants, distortion of branch growth, and premature foliage loss. Prolonged infection often leads to the death of individual branches or the decline of entire landscape specimens if left untreated.
