The biology of this organism involves a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, allowing it to colonize nutrient-poor, gypsum-rich, or saline soils. It thrives where other plants struggle to grow due to extreme pH levels or mineral imbalances. Its morphology consists of broad, flat lobes that adhere to the soil surface to maximize moisture capture.
The presence of this lichen is easily identifiable by the crust-like patches on the soil surface. In agricultural terms, these signs are not symptoms of a disease, but rather indicators of specific soil conditions, such as high salinity, lack of organic matter, or prolonged abandonment of land where no intensive mechanical tillage has been practiced for several seasons.
