The false morel (genus Gyromitra) belongs to the Discinaceae family. While not a pathogen in the standard sense of agricultural crop diseases, in forestry and nursery environments, it functions as a soil-inhabiting fungus that can interfere with the establishment of young woody plants. It is primarily a saprotrophic organism that thrives in specific soil conditions associated with coniferous forests.

The fungus develops through an extensive mycelial network in the forest floor and topsoil layers. Its biological role is the decomposition of woody matter, which is essential for nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. However, in controlled planting areas, aggressive mycelial growth can create localized nutrient imbalances or physical barriers that may affect the health of young seedlings.
