The Haematommataceae family consists of lichens that are frequently encountered on tree trunks and branches. It is crucial to distinguish them from parasitic fungi, as lichens are symbiotic organisms that do not derive nutrition from the host plant's tissues, meaning they do not technically cause a disease in the conventional pathogenic sense.
These lichens thrive in environments with stable humidity and moderate light exposure. They are typically found on mature trees that have developed rough, deeply fissured bark, which provides an ideal physical substrate for the lichen thallus to anchor and expand over many years of growth.
Symptoms of their presence include crust-like or squamulose formations on the bark surface. These growths can vary in color, often exhibiting distinct reddish hues from which the family name is derived. While they look striking, they remain external to the inner wood and conductive tissues of the plant, utilizing moisture and minerals directly from the atmosphere.
The agricultural significance of Haematommataceae is primarily indirect. Excessive accumulation of lichen growth can create refuges for overwintering pests and disease vectors, such as scale insects or mites. Furthermore, heavily encrusted bark may limit the tree's natural ability to shed dead bark or perform efficient gas exchange, potentially stressing the host tree over time.
Management and prevention focus on maintaining a healthy, well-ventilated orchard environment. Key strategies include:
- Regular pruning to improve air circulation and light penetration throughout the canopy.
- Mechanical brushing of trunks to remove dead bark and lichen colonies during the dormant season.
- Application of lime wash or authorized fungicides/pesticides if the infestation becomes a harbor for harmful insects.
