Haptoglossa is a genus of specialized entomopathogenic fungi belonging to the Oomycota phylum. Rather than infecting plants, this fungus acts as a specialized predator of soil-dwelling nematodes. Its ecological function is to maintain the health of plant root zones by suppressing populations of pathogenic worms that typically cause severe damage to agricultural crops.
The infectious cycle begins with the release of motile zoospores into the soil water film. Once these zoospores encounter a suitable nematode host, they encyst on its cuticle, penetrate the body wall, and develop internal hyphae. This process effectively kills the host, making Haptoglossa a powerful biological tool in managing nematode-related root diseases.
The target hosts include various phytoparasitic nematodes that compromise the root systems of essential crops such as vegetables, cereals, and tubers. By reducing the number of nematodes, Haptoglossa helps prevent the formation of root galls and necrosis, thereby allowing plants to absorb nutrients and water more efficiently.
The development and distribution of Haptoglossa are strictly regulated by environmental factors, particularly soil moisture and aeration. It thrives in soils with moderate organic matter content, which facilitates the motility of its zoospores. In dry or compacted soils, the effectiveness of this fungal predator is significantly reduced due to restricted mobility.

Key strategies include avoiding broad-spectrum chemical nematicides that kill beneficial microbes and incorporating organic amendments to foster a suppressive soil environment.
