These organisms act as opportunists that thrive in water bodies enriched with high nutrient levels. While they do not directly infect plant tissues like fungi or bacteria, their bloom causes rapid changes in water chemistry, including oxygen depletion and the potential release of allelopathic substances that negatively affect crop development.

The primary systems at risk include hydroponic nutrient film technique (NFT) setups and rice paddies under intensive management. The development is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high water temperature, excessive light intensity, and stagnant flow conditions that allow algae populations to reach critical densities.

Key symptoms and diagnostic signs include:

  • turbid or discolored nutrient solutions;
  • a characteristic slimy, bio-film layer coating the roots;
