Harpellomycetes are a distinct class of fungi within the division Zoopagomycota. It is critical for agricultural professionals to clarify that these organisms are not plant pathogens. Unlike typical agricultural pests or fungal diseases, Harpellomycetes are highly specialized organisms that inhabit the digestive tracts of aquatic arthropods, such as larvae of mayflies and blackflies.
The nature of their interaction with the host is strictly commensal. The fungus attaches to the lining of the insect's hindgut, absorbing nutrients from the passing food mass. This process does not damage the insect's tissues and certainly does not involve any interaction with plant roots, stems, or leaves.
Because they are biological obligates residing within aquatic insects, Harpellomycetes do not cause any diseases in crops. They lack the enzymatic machinery required to infect plant tissues. Therefore, they are of no concern to agronomists, farmers, or gardeners regarding plant health management or crop protection strategies.

No protection or control measures are necessary for this class of fungi. Any application of fungicides aimed at eradicating Harpellomycetes would be completely ineffective for agricultural benefit and detrimental to the aquatic ecosystem. Always prioritize scientific identification before deciding on any chemical intervention.
