Harringtonia (Harringtonia) is a genus of pathogenic fungi responsible for severe vascular diseases in various woody plants. These fungi are primarily spread by wood-boring insects, particularly bark beetles, which act as vectors, introducing the pathogen directly into the host plant's internal transport system during their feeding and breeding activities.
The fungus acts as a systemic pathogen, colonizing the xylem and interrupting the flow of water and nutrients from the roots to the crown. The combination of fungal mycelial growth and the plant's defense response, which leads to vessel occlusion, results in rapid wilting and dieback of the tree, often causing significant economic and ecological losses.
Host plants typically include conifers and various broad-leaved trees, especially those already under environmental stress. Drought conditions, soil compaction, or physical damage significantly increase the susceptibility of the host, making it easier for the fungi to establish and proliferate within the vascular tissues.
Symptoms of an infection are often distinct, starting with chlorosis and drooping of the foliage. As the disease progresses, the leaves or needles turn brown and drop prematurely. A diagnostic feature is the blue or black staining of the wood beneath the bark, which indicates the presence of the fungal pathogen within the xylem vessels.
