It is not a classic plant pathogen that causes systemic infections, but its extensive mycelial network can interfere with the nutrient uptake and physiological development of nearby crops and landscape plants.

The fungus is characterized by its pale, creamy-colored caps that often form fairy rings in lawns, gardens, and near the root zones of trees and shrubs. Its taxonomic classification is within the Hymenogastraceae family. In agricultural conditions, its role is complex; while it aids forest trees, it can outcompete smaller garden plants for nitrogen and water, acting as a stress factor for the plant host.

Symptoms of its presence include the visual emergence of fruiting bodies during wet seasons and the subsequent decline of nearby plant vigor. Gardeners may notice poor growth, stunted leaves, and yellowing, which often indicate that the root zone is occupied by a strong fungal colonization that alters soil chemistry and competes for root space.

The development of poison pie is heavily favored by environmental factors such as high soil moisture, poor drainage, and low oxygen levels in the substrate. It thrives in soils rich in decomposing organic matter. Once established, the mycelium can persist for years, with spores dispersed effectively by rain splashes and wind to colonize new, suitable habitats.

Effective management strategies focus on modifying soil conditions to make the environment less hospitable for the fungus:

  • Improve soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, which is a major factor for colonization.
  • Practice regular aeration to increase oxygen levels in the rhizosphere.
