The host range of this organism includes various hardwood and softwood trees. It is frequently identified on bark surfaces where wood-decay fungi are already established. By attacking these other fungi, Helminthosphaeria corticiorum plays a complex ecological role, potentially limiting or modifying the progression of primary wood-rotting pathogens.
The visible signs of infestation appear as minute, black, globose to flask-shaped perithecia.
