Description
The genus Hemimycena consists of a variety of basidiomycete fungi that primarily function as saprotrophs but can occasionally act as opportunistic pathogens. In agricultural settings, these fungi are often observed colonizing weakened plant tissues, especially when environmental conditions favor moisture retention.
The disease is caused by microscopic fungal organisms that thrive on decaying organic matter. Under conditions of high humidity and poor ventilation, Hemimycena can spread to living tissues of various crops, taking advantage of the plant's reduced physiological resistance to cause localized tissue degradation.
A wide range of crops, including cereals, forage grasses, and certain vegetables, can be susceptible to these fungi. The pathogens typically target the basal sections of plants and lower leaves, particularly when the crop canopy is too dense or soil moisture levels remain consistently high throughout the growing season.
Symptoms include the appearance of delicate whitish fungal growth, accompanied by soft rot symptoms and chlorosis on lower foliage. If left unchecked, the infection can compromise the plant's root system, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and, in severe cases, lodging or total loss of the young crop stand.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach, emphasizing good crop hygiene and site drainage. Removing crop debris and managing plant density are essential to reduce the availability of substrates and improve air circulation. Preventive fungicide applications may be utilized as a last resort in high-pressure scenarios.
