Hemiphacidiaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that act as significant pathogens affecting a wide range of coniferous tree species. These fungi are primarily responsible for various types of needle cast diseases and blights, which can lead to severe defoliation and stunted growth in forest nurseries, ornamental plantings, and young plantations.
The host range includes major coniferous genera such as Pinus, Picea, Juniperus, and Larix. The infection is primarily caused by fungal spores dispersed by wind and splashing water, which colonize needle tissues during periods of high humidity. As obligate or facultative parasites, these fungi exploit host resources, leading to chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of the needles.
Diagnostic signs of infection include the appearance of localized yellowish or brown discoloration on the needles. Over time, the fungus produces reproductive structures, specifically apothecia, which appear as dark, small, erumpent lesions on the surface of the infected needles.
