Hendersonia needle cast is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Hendersonia acicola. This fungus primarily targets species within the Pinus genus, affecting both nursery stock and mature trees in forest plantations. As a necrotrophic pathogen, it leads to tissue death in needles, resulting in premature defoliation and weakened tree health.
The fungus is particularly active in areas with high humidity and limited airflow. It tends to colonize needles in the lower and middle sections of the canopy. While it primarily attacks older needles, severe infestations can significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, ultimately causing substantial growth loss and poor aesthetic quality.
Visual identification of the disease involves spotting small yellow or brown necrotic lesions on the pine needles. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often causing the needles to turn reddish-brown or gray. A distinct diagnostic feature is the appearance of small, black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia that break through the needle surface, indicating the active sporulation phase of the fungus.
The spread of Hendersonia acicola is facilitated by environmental factors such as frequent rainfall, high humidity, and poor site management. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing water, landing on susceptible needles. The presence of leaf litter beneath the trees serves as a primary inoculum source, where the fungus overwinters and produces new spores during the next growing season.
Management strategies for Hendersonia needle cast focus on cultural and chemical control measures. Sanitation is paramount; removing and disposing of infected fallen needles helps reduce the initial inoculum level. Improving stand density through thinning ensures better ventilation, which lowers humidity levels around the needles. Fungicide applications, particularly those containing copper or systemic active ingredients, are effective when applied during the period of needle elongation to prevent new infections.
