Description

The fungus Heterobasidion abietinum is a pathogenic basidiomycete responsible for severe root and butt rot in fir tree species. This fungus is a primary cause of productivity loss in coniferous forests throughout the temperate regions. It decomposes the wood tissue of roots and stems, leading to structural instability and eventual tree mortality, which poses a significant threat to timber resources.

The disease primarily targets trees of the genus Abies, including the Silver Fir. The fungus initiates an infection cycle through basidiospores landing on fresh wounds or recently cut stumps. Once established in a stump, the mycelium spreads underground to the roots of adjacent healthy trees through root grafts and contacts in the soil, effectively expanding the disease focus.

Symptoms of the infection often include progressive thinning of the crown, chlorosis of the needles, and reduced annual diameter increment. As the rot progresses internally, it weakens the tree's anchorage, often leading to windthrow. In later stages, perennial bracket-shaped sporocarps of the fungus may appear near the root collar or under the bark of infected stumps.

The development of Heterobasidion abietinum is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with moist soil profiles and cool temperatures favoring the survival of the pathogen. High-density stands and past harvesting activities create ideal conditions for the colonization of stumps, which act as a reservoir for the fungus, allowing it to persist in the ecosystem for several decades.

Management strategies focus on silvicultural practices that prevent the spread of the fungus. Key measures include reducing the number of susceptible stumps through targeted removal, avoiding mechanical damage to standing timber during thinning operations, and applying biological control agents (such as Phlebiopsis gigantea) to freshly cut surfaces. Planting a mix of broad-leaved tree species alongside conifers can help break the contact of root systems.
