Description
Annosum root rot, caused by the fungal pathogen Heterobasidion annosum, is one of the most destructive diseases affecting coniferous forests globally. This basidiomycete fungus targets the root systems and the lower stems of trees, resulting in wood decay and loss of structural stability.
Host species primarily include members of the Pinaceae family, such as spruce, pine, and fir. The pathogen acts as both a necrotrophic and saprotrophic agent, capable of invading healthy roots through contact or utilizing the remains of stumps left after timber harvesting, which serve as primary infection reservoirs.
Symptoms of the disease are often progressive and difficult to detect in early stages. Visible indicators include reduced crown density, chlorotic needles, and reduced annual growth. In advanced stages, perennial fruiting bodies may appear at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots, while internal wood displays a characteristic white or brown decay with dark lines.
Environmental conditions such as soil temperature, moisture levels, and soil pH play a significant role in the development of the disease. The pathogen thrives in soils that allow for rapid mycelial growth through root grafts, especially in dense, monoculture plantations where trees are planted at close intervals, facilitating root contact.
Management strategies focus on silvicultural practices rather than direct chemical intervention in mature stands. These include treating fresh stumps with borate compounds or biological control agents like Phlebiopsis gigantea to prevent initial colonization. Additionally, promoting forest diversity by mixing species can significantly reduce the rate of spread throughout the stand.
