Description
Heterobasidion insulare is a pathogenic fungus recognized as a significant agent of root and butt rot in various coniferous tree species. It belongs to the same genus as the more common root rot pathogen H. annosum, but it exhibits specific ecological preferences and host range adaptations, primarily within Asian forest ecosystems.
The pathogen primarily attacks the root systems and the lower stem tissues of conifers. Trees such as spruce, pine, and fir are particularly susceptible. The fungus invades the wood tissue, disrupting the host's ability to transport water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the decline and death of the infected tree.
Symptoms of an infection include internal wood decay characterized by a mottled or stringy appearance in the root collar and base of the trunk. External signs include crown thinning, needle yellowing, premature shedding, and the eventual development of butt rot, which weakens the tree's structural integrity and increases the risk of windthrow.
The development and spread of the disease are facilitated by environmental factors such as high humidity and favorable soil temperatures. Spores can infect fresh wounds on stumps or roots, while mycelial spread occurs underground through the direct contact of healthy roots with infected root tissues of adjacent trees.
