Western annosus root rot, caused by the fungal pathogen Heterobasidion occidentale, is a destructive disease affecting the root systems of various conifer species. It is widely recognized for its ability to cause severe root decay, leading to windthrow and tree mortality, which significantly impacts the health and productivity of forests.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include spruce, fir, and other coniferous species found in the western regions of North America. Heterobasidion occidentale is highly adapted to these environments, functioning as a primary pathogen that can kill trees of all ages, although it is particularly aggressive in mature stands and plantations.
Symptoms of the infection are often subtle until the disease is well-established. Early signs include thin, chlorotic foliage, reduced annual growth, and crown thinning. A diagnostic feature is the presence of basidiocarps, or conks, which develop at the root collar or on stumps. These structures are typically perennial, leathery, and possess a white to cream-colored pore surface.
The disease spreads through two main pathways: airborne spores that colonize fresh stump surfaces and direct root-to-root contact between adjacent trees. Once a tree is infected, the mycelium travels through the root system, creating expansion zones that eventually cause mortality in groups, often referred to as infection centers that grow outward over time.
Management of this root rot focuses on prevention and silvicultural control. Key practices include:
- Stump treatment with borate-based fungicides or biological control agents.
- Minimizing root damage during thinning operations.
- Promoting the growth of resistant tree species in high-risk areas.
