Description
The pathogen Heterobasidion parviporum is a basidiomycete fungus responsible for widespread root and butt rot in coniferous forests. This disease is a significant economic threat, as it compromises the structural integrity of the timber and reduces the overall productivity of forest ecosystems.
The primary host for Heterobasidion parviporum is the Norway spruce. The fungus invades the tree system primarily through root-to-root contact in dense stands or by colonizing freshly exposed wood surfaces, such as stumps left behind after thinning or harvesting operations.
Symptoms of the infection are often subtle in early stages, progressing to crown thinning, chlorosis of the needles, and eventually tree death. A classic sign is the presence of perennial sporocarps (fruiting bodies) at the base of the infected tree or between buttress roots, often hidden under forest debris.
The development of the fungus is favored by moist environmental conditions and soil types that facilitate mycelial spread. The pathogen produces basidiospores that are dispersed by wind, allowing it to colonize susceptible substrates over large distances, making it a highly persistent forest pathogen.
Effective management requires a combination of silvicultural practices, such as minimizing bark damage during logging, and stump treatment with biological control agents or fungicides. Monitoring stand health and removing heavily infected trees are critical steps to mitigate the spread of this destructive fungus.
