Heterodera infection is a serious soil-borne disease caused by cyst-forming nematodes of the genus Heterodera. These microscopic parasites penetrate plant roots, causing physiological disruption and significant damage to the plant's vascular system, which limits the uptake of water and essential nutrients.

The host range of these nematodes includes many economically vital agricultural crops, such as potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, and soybeans. Because specific Heterodera species are often host-specific, the continuous cultivation of susceptible crops on the same field creates ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication of the pathogen.

Visible symptoms of the disease include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, often appearing in patches across a field. The most definitive sign of the infection is the presence of tiny, lemon-shaped white or brownish cysts attached to the root surface, which represent the sedentary females protecting their eggs.

These nematodes are highly persistent; the cysts serve as a dormant stage, allowing the population to survive in the soil for several years without a host, making the management of infested fields particularly challenging for farmers.
