Heterodoassansia ranunculina is a specialized fungal pathogen that causes a systemic smut disease in members of the Ranunculaceae family. Classified as an exobasidiomycete, the fungus primarily targets the vegetative organs of the plant, resulting in significant tissue hypertrophy and morphological deformities.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species of buttercups (Ranunculus), including both wild populations and cultivated ornamental varieties. The fungus is most frequently encountered in environments with high humidity and poor aeration, which are essential factors for the successful colonization and spread of the infection.
The hallmark symptoms of the disease include the development of visible galls or swellings on the petioles and stems. Inside these specialized structures, the fungus produces a mass of spores. Infected plants typically exhibit chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature wilting, significantly compromising their physiological health and aesthetic appearance.
