Heteropatella antirrhini is a pathogenic fungus known to cause leaf spot disease in snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus). This pathogen primarily targets the foliage and stems of the host plant, often resulting in significant aesthetic damage that reduces the commercial value of the flowers.
The primary host for this fungus is the snapdragon. Both seedlings and mature plants are susceptible to infection, although younger plants under stress or poor growing conditions are more likely to show severe symptoms that can lead to total plant collapse if left untreated.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular, or irregular spots on the leaves, which are initially tan or brown with darker margins. As the infection progresses, the fungal fruiting bodies, known as pycnidia, appear as tiny black dots within the lesions, which serve as the primary source for further sporulation.
The development and spread of Heteropatella antirrhini are closely linked to moisture levels. The pathogen thrives in humid environments, particularly where foliage remains wet for extended periods. Water splash from rainfall or overhead irrigation is the main mechanism for the dispersal of spores throughout the crop canopy.
