Heterophoma is a fungal plant disease caused by various species of the genus Heterophoma. Formerly classified within the Phoma complex, these fungi are now recognized as distinct pathogens with specific characteristics affecting a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. The disease primarily manifests as leaf spots and stem necroses, impacting the overall health and vigor of the plants.

This pathogen has a wide host range, frequently affecting both herbaceous and woody plants in agricultural fields and greenhouse environments. It is known to parasitize both vegetative tissues and seeds. The ability of the fungus to survive on plant debris allows it to persist in the field, making it a persistent challenge for integrated pest management programs.

Symptoms typically begin as small chlorotic spots that enlarge into brown or black necrotic lesions, often with a distinct margin. A hallmark of the infection is the development of pycnidia — small, black, flask-shaped fungal structures visible to the naked eye on the necrotic tissue. In humid conditions, these pycnidia release spores that continue to infect surrounding plant parts, causing premature leaf senescence and stem weakening.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease development, with warm temperatures and high humidity significantly favoring spore germination and infection. The pathogen is disseminated primarily through water splashes, wind-borne spores, and contaminated agricultural tools or seeds. Prolonged wet periods ensure the rapid spread of the disease within the crop canopy, leading to potential outbreaks.

The economic impact of Heterophoma can be severe, leading to reduced yields and inferior produce quality. Prevention is the primary strategy, focusing on cultural practices to minimize inoculum levels. These measures include strict crop rotation, the use of certified disease-free seeds, proper field sanitation to remove infected residues, and the judicious application of fungicides during peak infection risk periods to suppress the disease progression.
