These fungi, classified within the order Helotiales, are known to act as parasites on various plant species, affecting both stem and foliage tissue. The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to the host plant, with the fungi surviving in decaying debris or dormant states during unfavorable conditions.

The host range for Heterosphaeriaceae includes a variety of crops, such as legumes, cereal grasses, and ornamental plants. The infection disrupts the plant's metabolic processes by attacking cell walls and consuming stored nutrients.
