Description
Hibberdiales is an order of golden algae that, within a phytopathological context, are identified as significant pathogens. These organisms, belonging to the group of heterokonts, are capable of inducing severe physiological disruptions in various aquatic and semi-aquatic plant species, posing challenges for cultivation systems.
The causative agents are unicellular or colonial organisms characterized by a unique scale-like cell structure. The type of disease is typically associated with endophytic or epiphytic colonization, where the pathogen penetrates the host tissue, disrupting essential processes such as photosynthesis and cellular metabolism.
Crops most susceptible to these infections include various aquatic plants, rice varieties, and crops grown in hydroponic systems. Under high-moisture conditions, the pathogen rapidly colonizes the plant surface, leading to a significant reduction in biomass production and overall plant health if left untreated.
Symptoms of infection include leaf and stem discoloration, often transitioning to a yellow-brown hue, the appearance of a sticky mucus-like layer, and clear deformation of vegetative organs. The plants quickly lose turgor and metabolic vigor, which eventually leads to tissue necrosis and the potential loss of the crop.
The conditions for development and spread are strictly dependent on the water management system. High humidity, stagnant water, and nutrient-rich environments (eutrophication) provide the perfect conditions for the proliferation of the pathogen’s zoospores, significantly increasing the risk of widespread infestation and agricultural damage.
