The confusion regarding its classification as a plant plague arises from a misunderstanding of its morphology, where its strap-like, dichotomously branched thalli are occasionally misidentified as fungal infections or parasitic growth when washed ashore.
There is no pathogen associated with the name Himanthalia. As a purely marine organism, it lacks the biological mechanisms required to infect agricultural crops. It does not possess a mycelium, haustoria, or any mechanism to penetrate the cell walls of terrestrial plants, making it impossible for this organism to act as a plant pathogen.
Any perceived symptoms attributed to Himanthalia are purely related to the natural decomposition of marine organic matter. When the algae is deposited on the shore and begins to dry or decay, it may release odors or change in color, which are simple biochemical degradation processes, not signs of an outbreak or a spread of an infectious disease.

Its survival depends on saline water, specific light intensity, and mechanical attachment to hard substrates.
