Hirsutella is a genus of anamorphic fungi known primarily as potent entomopathogens rather than plant pathogens. In agricultural practice, these fungi are valued for their ability to parasitize and control populations of various insect pests and mites. The fungus functions by infecting the insect host through its cuticle. Once inside, the fungus propagates throughout the host's body, consuming its resources and producing metabolites that lead to the death of the pest. This process is essentially a form of biological control that significantly reduces the pressure of infestation on field and greenhouse crops.
