Hispidicarpomycetaceae is a family of fungi within the Dothideomycetes class. These organisms are recognized as significant plant pathogens, primarily targeting woody plant species. Their life cycle involves the colonization of host tissues, leading to localized necrosis and long-term damage to the plant's vascular integrity.
The causative agent acts by infecting the bark and outer stems of the host, where it forms characteristic fruiting structures known as hispidicarpia. This parasitic activity interferes with the plant's nutrient transport system, ultimately causing branch dieback and reduced vigor in susceptible plant species.
Key symptoms include the appearance of dark, rough, or bristly fungal structures erupting through the bark. As the disease progresses, necrotic lesions spread, leading to extensive cracking of the bark and potential girdling of branches, which can eventually result in the death of individual limbs or the entire tree.
