The Hoehnelomycetaceae family consists of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the Exobasidiomycetes class. These pathogens are known for their intricate life cycles and their tendency to cause localized morphological changes in host tissues, often leading to hypertrophy or hyperplasia in infected plant parts.

As obligate parasites, these fungi infect specific host plants, typically focusing on leaves, shoots, and reproductive structures. The disease type is characterized by systemic infection that disrupts plant hormone balance, leading to the formation of galls, leaf thickening, and abnormal shoot development commonly referred to as witches' brooms.
