Hormiactis fimicola is a microscopic fungal pathogen recognized as a significant threat in commercial mushroom production. It belongs to a group of specialized molds that specifically target the casing soil and fruit bodies of cultivated mushrooms, causing substantial quantitative and qualitative losses in the fungal industry.
The primary host for this fungus is the button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The pathogen thrives by colonizing the nutrient-rich casing layer and extending its mycelium onto the developing mushroom pins and mature caps, effectively choking the growth of the crop and disrupting the fruiting process of the host fungus.
Symptoms of the disease initially appear as distinct white to pale-pink fluffy mycelial patches on the surface of the casing soil. As the infection progresses, the mycelium covers the mushroom fruit bodies, causing them to deform, turn brown, and undergo necrotic decay. These affected mushrooms lose their structural integrity and become unsellable due to poor appearance and putrid odor.
The growth and dissemination of Hormiactis fimicola are highly dependent on the microclimate within mushroom growing rooms. High relative humidity (exceeding 90%) combined with moderate temperatures (18–24°C) creates the ideal environment for the pathogen to produce and release spores. These spores are efficiently transmitted through air currents, irrigation water, tools, and contaminated clothing.
Effective management and prevention of this pathogen rely on rigorous sanitation and environmental control:
- Thorough pasteurization of casing materials and compost.
- Implementation of strict hygiene protocols for staff and equipment.
- Active climate control to prevent stagnant high-humidity pockets in the growing room.
- Rapid identification and mechanical removal of infected mushroom clusters.
- Regular disinfection of all surfaces and tools to prevent cross-contamination.
