Description

Humaria is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division. In agricultural settings, these fungi often thrive as saprotrophs in soil rich in organic matter, but under specific microclimatic conditions, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens, negatively impacting the development of young plants and seedlings.

The disease is primarily soil-borne. The pathogen targets the root system and the stem base of vulnerable host plants. By colonizing the substrate surface, the fungus creates a hostile environment that inhibits nutrient uptake and water transport, eventually leading to the rapid decay of seedling tissues.

Vegetable crops grown in greenhouses or nurseries, such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, are highly susceptible to Humaria. Ornamental plants are also frequently affected if the growing medium is improperly prepared or if hygiene standards in the greenhouse are not maintained.

The clinical signs of an infection include:

  • Presence of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia) that are orange or brown in color on the soil surface.
  • Softening and darkening of the stem base at the soil line.
  • Wilting and stunted growth of seedlings despite adequate soil moisture.
  • Rapid collapse and death of plant patches in affected nursery trays.

The development of the fungus is accelerated by high humidity, poor aeration, and constant waterlogging of the growing medium. The spores spread efficiently through contaminated irrigation water, tools, or infected soil components. A lack of light and poor ventilation further exacerbate the spread of the pathogen.

Preventive measures focus on strict sanitation. Utilizing sterilized substrates and avoiding over-watering are key to preventing the growth of Humaria. If symptoms appear, immediate removal of the affected seedlings and the surrounding soil is necessary. Improving air circulation and ensuring the substrate is well-drained are critical steps for long-term plant health.
