Huntiella bhutanensis is an ascomycete fungus recognized as a significant pathogen affecting various woody plant species. Belonging to the Microascales order, this organism is capable of colonizing the vascular systems of trees, causing severe physiological stress and potentially leading to the death of the host plant.
This pathogen primarily targets trees within the Eucalyptus genus, though it can impact other woody species as well. The fungus typically behaves as a stress-dependent pathogen, successfully colonizing trees that have been compromised by environmental stress factors, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or injuries caused by boring insects.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by wood discoloration, necrosis in the cambial layer, and internal tissue decay. As the infection progresses, the transport of water and nutrients is hindered, which manifests externally as wilting leaves, canopy thinning, and in advanced stages, the total dieback of the tree crown.
The spread of Huntiella bhutanensis is facilitated by environmental moisture and the presence of vector insects. Spores are primarily dispersed through air currents and rain splashes, but insect vectors—which feed on or bore into the tree bark—play a critical role by introducing the pathogen directly into the inner tissues of the tree.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pathogen. Key prevention strategies include:

- rapid removal of infected trees to reduce inoculum density;
