Huntiella moniliformopsis is a fungal pathogen known for causing serious diseases in various woody species, primarily within the genus Eucalyptus. It functions as a primary pathogen that colonizes the vascular tissues and cambium, severely compromising the health of the host tree.
The fungus is particularly detrimental to commercial eucalyptus plantations. It exploits the host's vulnerability, often appearing after environmental stresses such as drought or physical damage. Once established, the fungus can rapidly expand its necrotic lesions, eventually girdling branches or the main trunk.
Symptoms of an infection include significant bark necrosis and the formation of perennial cankers. A key sign is the exudation of kino, a dark red gum characteristic of eucalypts, which flows from the infected areas as the tree attempts to wall off the invading pathogen. Foliage often shows signs of chlorosis and wilting due to the impaired vascular system.
