Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis is an obligate oomycete pathogen known for causing downy mildew in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. As a member of the Peronosporaceae family, this organism serves as a primary model for studying plant-pathogen interactions, specifically focusing on the evolution of resistance genes in plants.

This pathogen exclusively infects members of the Brassicaceae family. While it is primarily a research model, the biological principles derived from studying H. arabidopsidis provide invaluable insights into protecting agronomically important crops such as oilseed rape, cabbage, kale, and other cruciferous vegetables from related devastating oomycete species.

The visual symptoms of the infection include chlorotic (yellow) spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the infection progresses, these areas become necrotic. A distinctive feature of this disease is the development of a fluffy, grayish mass of sporophores on the underside of the leaves, visible during periods of high humidity.

The disease cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly the presence of free water and cool temperatures, which are necessary for the germination of spores. The pathogen spreads rapidly through air-dispersed conidia, making crowded or poorly ventilated environments high-risk areas for rapid outbreaks.
